Origin of the Presa Canario

The Presa Canario originated in the 16th century in the Canary Islands.  The Presa Canario is the result of the crossbreeding of the Bardino (or Majorero), from the island of Fuerteventura, and the Molosoid. The Molosoid is native to the islands of Tenerife and Gran Canaria, and in the Canary Archipelago the Molosoid was originally bred for fighting. Its fiery temperament and high drive was inherited from the Bardino, which was a pre-Hispanic working and aggressive cattle dog. Other breeds from Great Britain and Cuba influenced the Breed. The Presa Canario was introduced to the Canary Islands by Spanish Colonists, and Conquistadors to guard farms and cattle.
